By neglecting specific fundamental installation and handling standards may damage the transformer and result in premature failure or sudden breakdown. Each transformer manufactured at the foundry is assembled properly and must have undergone complete tests, after that it is again inspected and packed for shipment. These all are included as a part of service package, which needs to be done for safe operations of dry type transformers.
Inspection upon receipt is the next thing to do. You should immediately identify all units and make checks against the shipping list once receiving the shipment. It is always better to detect any damage that may have been incurred in transition. If found any damage, file a claim instantly with the carrier and send notice to local sales office telling them about the extent of damage, giving complete identification, name of carrier and railroad car number, if it is transported by rail.
Handling and shipment of the transformer is done in a wooden skid. If there is a need for handling ventilated dry type transformers outdoor during rainy conditions, you should protect it against moisture and prevent it entering into the transformer.
If a transformer is not installed and energized instantly should be stored inside a clean dry place that has a uniform temperature to prevent condensation.
You can enhance the life of the transformer by giving proper care and attention along with regular maintenance services. Ask professionals to take care of your transformer device and make proper tests and checks for transformer oil and equipments.
What to do before energizing?
Experts loosen or remove entire shipping hardware prior energizing the transformer and store for future use. If they think there is a need of relocation of transformer in future, reinstallation shall be done with all shipping hardware. They check all tap jumpers for precise locations, and all bolted connections for tightness, with help of two wrenches.
Once the installation is done, they remove all debris from the bottom of the wiring compartment. After that, they securely fasten all screws that hold panels and covers in place in order to prevent vibration of the parts as much as possible.
If you want your transformer to live for longer time, never overload it for longer time period. The rising temperature can damage insulation and cause transformer failure.
