Sports utility vehicles are the trend nowadays as people are by and large on the lookout for more space and more style in their cars. There are SUVs of several types and sizes available in the car market today across a wide price range. The Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra has a special name here when it comes to utility vehicles. One of their outstanding products is the Scorpio, which has been the best seller in its segment for a number of years.
Mahindra’s first SUV
Scorpio was the first ever SUV introduced by Mahindra and Mahindra in the year 2002. More than a decade now, the car has not yet lost any of its charm and continues to be popular here. Mahindra has taken care to upgrade the Scorpio constantly but the latest face-lift has transformed the Scorpio totally. The new face of the Scorpio was unveiled just last year and it was marketed as the new generation SUV in the country.
The new Scorpio is built on a new platform and the new chassis is stiffer and lighter. This makes the car more stable at high speeds and ensures better ride and handling. The front and rear also gets a major overhaul. A new set of projector headlights with LED daytime running lights, new bumper and a wider radiator grille makes the front part looks more aggressive. The centre console is now redesigned to give it a layered look. It gets a new climate control system, with circular dials for controlling temperature and blower speed. The engine specifications remain the same as the earlier models butthe power delivery has increased up to 138 bhp and the fuel economy has now reached 15.37 kmpl. The latest Scorpio model is the only SUV in its class to get a 6-speed automatic transmission. Two more colours -Regal Blue and Molten Red have been added to the already existing range of 5 colours.
Next generation Scorpio
Seeing the high demand for automatic cars in recent times, Mahindra might consider bringing in an automatic variant for its most successful SUV. Mahindra has even come out with a concept of a diesel electric hybrid version of the Scorpio. However there has been no official confirmation regarding these cars from Mahindra.
Price and rivals
The latest Mahindra Scorpio 2015 model falls in the price range of Rs 8.30 to Rs 13 lakhs. Tata Safari, Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano are other popular vehicles in the same segment. But for a car that is as popular and accepted as the Mahindra Scorpio, there hardly arises any question of competition.
