Advancements in Large Structures Construction Industry

Construction industry has evolved and is evolving at a great speed. Skyscrapers are nowadays as common as row houses. New inventions in the field of civil engineering have enabled mankind to build with speed and ease. This does not only mean buildings but also constructions inside water bodies like dams or bridges. Larger construction like big buildings or dams used to take a long period of time to build. And also involved large amount of human labour.

Heavy lifting for things like metal frames or bridges was a difficult task. But, this problem was solved by new generation cranes and other machinery. This evolution has brought construction technology to a point where hundreds of tonnes define ‘heavy’. And hence, today there are a lot of buildings, working stably in spite of being more than 30 storeys. Dams and bridges are a simple matter due to these technological wonders. There is least risk to human lives while working for a construction of a dam.

To reach this point in the evolution process, a lot of inventions were made. And there are today, a lot of new concepts like slip forming, caisson launching and other ways, which help to build stable and strong large structures.

Slip formation is a technique that involves construction without gaps or joints. Continuous construction made up of concrete is called as slip formation. Large vertical or horizontal structures can be constructed using this. For example, tall buildings or towers or bridges. Caisson launching is usually used for underground or under water constructions like dams and foundations for bridges. Caissons are used to create a workspace below the ground, which is safe and easy to work in. Since these are water tight; mud and water cannot interfere with the construction work.

The advancements are not only on physical level. CAD that is Computer Assisted Design, has made construction a lot easier than traditional paper based designs. This software can be used to actually visualise the design of any structure, the steps to be followed, actual sequence of construction, etc. With CAD, one does not have to wait for the whole design to be ready.

There are companies that offer such heavy lifting solutions. Bygging-Uddemann is one of them. The company seems to have good experience of working in this field.
